Farmall H Generator Question

The generator on my H has been spinning for perhaps 20 years without acually being used. I pulled it off the tractor and unsnapped the steel band. It looked relatively new and clean inside.

Is it a delegate for the scrapyard? I read somewhere that stated an unconnected generator will burn out. Did it burn out 20 years ago when my Dad unhooked it? What actually burns out on a generator? Can I myself without special tools check it? It has the V.R. mounted on top of it.
