If I understand correctly, one needs any die cast housing to proceed. The only thing available is the gear and shaft. That can be modified to fit the older die cast housing.
Years ago, I bought something like a 140 engine just for the tach drive and cast iron distributer mounting. I swapped those parts into my F-400 and resold the smaller engine at cost. It now has the late style tach drive with the thrust key.
My 650D (serial #4165 ) was produced half way through 1958, its last year. It still has the scolloped drive housing.
I have a standing search on at eBay for a die cast housing.
I find it odd that my W-400 (#1728) was shipped with the cast iron housing with provisions for tach and my F-400 (#520) was shipped with the non-tach cast iron housing. The W-400 has a non-tach shroud but the F-400 was shipped as seen below on this F-300.
