Jim - Actually a relay NOT required if you use the old light switch on 12 volts!
Compared to 6 volts lights, running 12 volt lights cuts the current through the switch by half. So the current load through the switch becomes much less.

The original light switch on first ever 12 volt conversion - done on my Super M nearly 30 years ago - is still working fine.
Only difference now is the dimming coil sees half the normal current. It hence now is less effective at dimming the lights. IE on the "dim" setting the 12 volts lights will burn somewhat brighter than OEM lights do on "dim" on 6 volts.
