I would make a better screen than stock, and use it in place of the original (which collapses and plugs easily) I also know that a filter on the intake side needs to be rated at twice the flow of the pump to allow solid operation. A dual cartridge filter in the big line to the pump would do the trick. (but look ugly) A screen made from bronze 80 mesh screen fabric, wrapped around a steel spring and soldered to the original fitting would be my second choice. Make sure when fabricating the new design that it is bigger, but still able to be placed and tightened in. Bleeding the air out of a canister filter can be troublesome, but necessary. JimN
