hydraulics on 350 U

I need to replace the internal hydraulic strainer screen in my 350 Utility. Can I do away with the OEM strainer screen and install an external cartridge filter? Thanks, AR

That is a very good question that I have not seen addressed. I have 2 300U's and changed both screens when I got them several years ago and they have been running good every since.
It sounds like you are already into it so you know the trials of getting to the screen.
I would think if it is possible to eliminate the resevoir screen you will have to start with a very clean resevoir.
I think you have a good idea, JimN is the resident expert on the 300/350U so hopefully he will see your post.
Good Luck,

It would seem that the screen in the reservoir is the last line of defense. A cartridge filter would go in the return line, so it would not remove things that end up in the reservoir when you check or fill it. Things like nose hairs, little bitty bugs, bits of straw, etc. Without the screen, those would go right into the system. I don't know if the screen in the regulator/safety valve picks up all that stuff or not, but those two screens are all you got. A cartridge filter in the return line might still be a good idea, to filter out suspended dirt and dust particles that are too small to be removed by the screen filters.

I would make a better screen than stock, and use it in place of the original (which collapses and plugs easily)
I also know that a filter on the intake side needs to be rated at twice the flow of the pump to allow solid operation. A dual cartridge filter in the big line to the pump would do the trick. (but look ugly)
A screen made from bronze 80 mesh screen fabric, wrapped around a steel spring and soldered to the original fitting would be my second choice.
Make sure when fabricating the new design that it is bigger, but still able to be placed and tightened in. Bleeding the air out of a canister filter can be troublesome, but necessary. JimN

My 2606 came without the $50 strainer screen when I got it so the fluid was bypassing the filter. Who knows how many years it ran without it. Probably the reason my steering doesn't work well now (messed up the pump). However my IH3000 loader has an external canister filter so it techinally has double filtration. I bought the new screen for IH. I suppose you could get you a piece of aluminum or nylon window screen and cut it to the size of the filter and stick it on with some type of hitack or gasket cement. The screen has a half circle bent metal spring that goes against the cover plate and holds the filter in tight so you need something to keep the filter tight.

The screen will catch floaters and stuff but when I cleaned it after 1 year it had a bunch of greasy fines plugging it up that I had to use carb cleaner on to clean it.
