you need to split the tractor (remove engine from tractor) to get the crank out. The reason for this is that you cant get the flywheel off or back on and you cant get the front off due to the timing cover and front pully. as far as installing bearings at low temps, i would say if the bearnings themselves are the same temp as the crank and cast parts then it should be ok. just keep in mind that if its really cold steel becomes more brittle and easier to snap.
