I have smoothed these up with an angle grinder, but a twist or cork screw effect could take a lot of grinding. What I use to restore the size of the square taper is shim stock. Let me correct that, shim stock has become obsolete, made that way by the aluminum can. I near fellover back two years ago, went looking for shim stock. Most places sales staff looked at me as though I had two heads.
My biggest fear in this case is you may have trouble keeping the steering control arm tight if this requires a lot of shim buildup. I've never used more than 2-3 wraps of shim stock.
