The filtering media can be removed from the canister by drilling out the spot welds, but then you have to weld it back in. A better way is to remove the entire assembly from the tractor and place it in a 5 gallon bucket. Fill the bucket with diesel fuel and let it set for a day or two. You may want to agitate it every so often, then remove the canister and set it somewhere so it can drain and dry.
