It sounds like you got it all right. These type of things aren't supposed to happen as the front pump is usually much more trouble some when sucking air is an issue. I'm just sitting here trying to remember though if I was ever succesful at getting the bolt out holding the suction tube in place by working through the pto as you will probably have to remove it even if you remove top cover. Of course it is usually done when differential etc is being repaired.
