Edward: My 6 volt alternator is 3 wire, same Delco alternator most folks are using on 12 volt conversions.
The day I needed it, I had just installed a new 6 volt battery. I went to the field doing row crop cultivation, all of a sudden I realized the Super A generator was on fire. I got the fire out, removed the generator belt and headed home. When I got to the auto electric rebuilder, I asked what was quick. He said, " Quick with that old generator is 2 weeks as I don't have the parts. Quick with a GM Delco alternator will be 5 min. as I only need to change the internal regulator from 12 volt to 6 volt."
He was right, I was out of there in 5 min., same price as a 12 volt alternator. That was almost 20 years ago. Took me longer to change the generator mount to accomodate the alternator, than changing that regulator.
My Super A was changed to negative ground, alternator is 3 wire and I use a push buttom to excite the alternator. That original battery went 13 years after the generator caught fire. I've been very satisfied with the 6 volt alternator. I am now still on my second battery.
