The wiring on my '45 Farmall A was getting pretty frayed and the insulation was brittle, so I decided to replace it. Instead of getting a kit, I just replaced each wire with the same size and color and made a makeshift harness with electrical tape. I plan to put a decent sheath around it so it'll mimic the original at a good savings. I also took the generator apart and cleaned it up, had it bench tested and put brushes and bushings in it. It's putting out the correct voltage via the cutout ('45 version of a regulator). The battery was bad and had been installed negative ground, so I got a new one and corrected that. Now everything is working fine, but I have a question. The light switch has several positions, which are used for various lighting needs. The most counter-clockwise position seems to be the "off" position. When in this position, no lights are on and the ammeter reads "0". In the next position clockwise, no lights are on but the ammeter reads a positive charge when the engine is running. Is this normal operation? Without an owners manual, I can only guess.
