Mine surprised me and came out fairly easy, some almost too easy. Think of them like the bolts on your crankcase oil pan. That whole seam has been soakin' in oil for years.

How much flex have you got on that vac system? There's not much room to snake through that fill hole and the past the edge of the bull gear to get to the bottom. Prolly be just as easy to drop the pans and have it done. O' course, that'll likely mean a couple of gaskets.
