The high speed idle, or load adjustment screw should be set at 3 full turns out and then left alone. You stated that if you turn it all the way in, the engine dies. This is normal because in effect, you have just shut off the flow of fuel. The only time that screw should be adjusted is if the engine misses or lacks power while running full throttle under a load. With the engine at a slow idle, adjusting that screw will make NO difference one way or the other.
The slow idle adjustment is a different story, it needs to be set 1 1/2 turns out initially, and then should be turned either in or out very slightly to give the smoothest idle.
