I think you're describing the situation where more than one gear in engaged, due to a problem with the shifting yokes. You can take the Shift level off the transmission housing, and reset the sliders which the yoke moves. I had to do this once on my 560 and have (so far) not had to do it again. I recall that the slider pattern was obvious and that a simple lever moved things into the right position.
