I had the same problem on 1940 H whenI wanted to upgrade to the newer style PTO. The old shaft is shorter. If I remember correctly I finnaly was able to take the constant mesh gear off, put the shaft in and then put the gear on with the shaft in place. I have done the same thing on a newer H and had no proglem. There has to be a way because many old Hs were upgraded to the newer style PTo.
