I'd think the first consideration is whether the tractor has a three- or four-position light switch. With the four-position, a cutout is what you need, since the voltage is regulated manually by selecting the Low or High charge positions of the switch (the Low position switches a resistor into the chage circuit). A three-position switch doesn't have that resistor and controls only the lights, so you would need a regulator in that case.
Not ashamed to say that I still learn something or other most days, and I'm not sure what difference there would be with a newer generator, so I'll be watching to see what that distinction might be.
