My sediment bowl/trap housing screws into the bottom of the tank (The top port is threaded, male). The port labeled OUT goes to the carb( male thread), and the shutoff valve screws into the the opposite port (female thread). Gas flows down into the bowl from above and then up through a screen to the out port. From a hydraulics perspective, gas flow increases as the exit line fills (same principle as gravity flow out the bottom of a tank increases as tank level increases).
Sometimes after cleaning out the bowl and reinstalling I have to losen the bowl to let the air out, but once the bowl is full, gas flows freely (my carbs are gravity fed). I suspect your bowl should have a screen, and you have reversed the flow through it and maybe flushed out sediment accumulation on the inlet side to the carb/fuel pump.
Or maybe your sediment trap/bowl is different than mine.
