Sam: Very few touch control levers work properly anymore. Even further, very few people understand how they work properly. I find one has to completely diassemble them every 5-10 years, clean and lubricate everything with graphite.
The double nut is supposed to set tension on the friction pad, however that adjustment doesn't work well if the sleeve next to locking nuts is turning with nuts and shaft. I put new friction pads and springs on my SA and 130 about 10 years ago. I notice the sleeves are once again turning, and they need to be cleaned and lubricated again.
On the thermostat issue, forget that damn clip, throw it in the Bay of Fundy. I use pipe sleeves inside the hose to hold the thermostst against port on engine, then just use a hose clamp to keep sleeve in position.
