Oil will drain out of the filter housing almost as fast as you pour it in with the cap bolt removed, but in the front of the housing (inside) is a small hole near the top. that leads to the oil galleries, the same as the allen head plug mentioned earlier, and is normally easier to get too. Use a pump can to fill that opening. You can even leave the cap off and watch it start pumping by spinning with the starter to make sure it has primed.
Loosing the prime from just setting is not normal. The first time you have the oil pan off, you might want to make sure the pick-up tube is tight where it attaches to the engine.
