Switching to 8 volts used to be quite common, because I believe all you had to do is adjust the regulator. Now with one wire Delco alternators so cheap and redily available most people just make the jump to 12 volts. you don't say what type of tractor you have but the later 6 volt systems worked quite well. Back in the 60's we had a 51 M that never seemed to charge right, but now we have a 6 volt(1958) IH 340 utility that works great. I have a Delco alternator on the shelf just waiting but I try not to fix things that aren't broken!
