As a clutch driven plate wears, it gets thinner. This thinning causes the pedal to have less and less free play. If it has good holding power, and is not slipping, (and not making rattling noises in the housing), it may just need adjustment. Freeplay is measured between the trans cover and the place where the pedal hits it when the clutch is against it (foot off the pedal). It should be one inch of free travel before it begins to be harder to push. It should be just the return spring pulling against the pressure from your hand as you push in on it that inch. Adjusting the rod so that it has that amount of freeplay, is important. If the pedal goes down several inches before doing anything it must be adjusted. If the freeplay is almost none, the pressure starts near first movement, and it still grinds into gear, it is clearly in need of a new clutch assambly. either the disk is warped, the splines on the removable input shaft are bad/binding, or the pressure plate is worn and not releasing correctly. It could be a combination of several. The clutch pressure plate throwout bearing system can be changed without splitting this tractor. The belly pump must be removed, and the process is then simple. The removal of the coupler for the input shaft to the tranny is critical to remember how it is put together. Pictures are best, and a manual (available here on this site). I hope this helps, Please keep us informed in a new thread if this one gets burried. JimN
