A mechanical ta will slip on the high side if it is adjusted wrong, ta clutch and flywheel are bad or your primary clutch is bad. I can believe you knurled your rollers and that works. A roller should hardness test around 58 hrc which is pretty much impossible to knurl. I have almost any of the parts you may need or a replacement t/a email me if interested, or need any help.
