Owen: Thanks for confirming that, I was quite sure they came from factory D-16. At least I knew everthing up to H, 300 etc. was D-16, and couldn't see any reason for the M, SM, 400, etc. to any different. Since I went diesel for heavy pulling in 63 with a 560, the gassers became less important.
However since I stopped farming and the big tractors are gone, I find myself working these little offsets much harder. My tractors are due for new plugs, thus I must try those D-18Y come spring. When I get out mowing, plowing, disking, etc., if the little tractors run away on me, I'll let you know.
What your saying about the progression from D-16 to D-15Y then on to D-18Y makes sense. I just could never figure why these guys liked their D-21. But then I like to hear them working no matter how large or small the tractor. If I wanted an off road sight seeing vehicle I'd buy a horse or a ATV.
