Howdy, boys. I don't want to re-start "The Great Spark Plug Brand War of 2007", but what is the correct number Champion plug for a Super M? Is it D-18Y? Thanks as always. mike durhan

Yes Albert Champion started Champion Spark Plugs
then sold to Stranahan family in Toledo Oh.He then
started AC.Did you guys know that all D type plugs
are made in Mexico City,NOT inthe good ole USA.
Have a good Christmas. From IH collector and an
employee of Champion Spark Plugs that ARE made
in the USA.

I'm like Billy Martin, "I feel strongly both ways!"
I use Champion D-21 in my 2 Ms and Autolite 3077 in my F-20s, F-30 and W-30.

The original plug number was D16. That was changed to D15Y which is one step colder but with an extended tip electrode. When unleaded gas became the only thing available the plug number was changed to D18Y, a little hotter to help keep plugs cleaner. An alternate plug is D21 for use under light loads. If you use D21s under heavier loads you run the risk of the plugs running too hot and causing preignition and run-on when you shut off the engine.

Owen: Thanks for confirming that, I was quite sure they came from factory D-16. At least I knew everthing up to H, 300 etc. was D-16, and couldn't see any reason for the M, SM, 400, etc. to any different. Since I went diesel for heavy pulling in 63 with a 560, the gassers became less important.

However since I stopped farming and the big tractors are gone, I find myself working these little offsets much harder. My tractors are due for new plugs, thus I must try those D-18Y come spring. When I get out mowing, plowing, disking, etc., if the little tractors run away on me, I'll let you know.

What your saying about the progression from D-16 to D-15Y then on to D-18Y makes sense. I just could never figure why these guys liked their D-21. But then I like to hear them working no matter how large or small the tractor. If I wanted an off road sight seeing vehicle I'd buy a horse or a ATV.

D18Y is correct. Autolite plugs can be 3116 or 386.

Have used D18Y in 130 504 and M. The Y in Champion plugs means "extended tip" Puts the spark further into the cylinder and they run a little hotter too.

Mike - I believe the SM came from the factory with D-16 plugs.

However unless you work your tractor HARD, you're gonna have better luck with hotter D-21. My experience has been the D-16 (also the D-18) tend to foul on a lightly loaded SM - even when the engine is in perfect condition and tuned correctly. (I suspect this is on account of the lousy quality, "low emissions" gasoline we're forced to buy these days...)

Mike: Most of the tractors I remember new from the factory were D-16. The SM may have been different. The ones I remember from new were H, 300, 130, SA, etc.

I still use D-16 in my SA, 130 and 140. when I encounter other tractors in that hp class, my tractors con't have to take a back seat to any of them. On disk with 18" blades and S-tine feild cultivator, I require 1.25 hp per disk blade or S-tine, just about the same as a modern day 200 hp tractor. The way I got it figured, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
