IF you're confident you can line the shifgearshift back up, try lifting the tranny cover and see waht you can see, but it looks like you'll have to frain the tanny and go inthrough the back.
You'll need to split it only if the repair requires lifting the spline shaft, and I don't think it will. It may be tight working from the back, but if it can be done from there (or the top) I can't see where you'll gain a thing by splitting the machine.
