I have heard of the anchor bolts breaking/falling out of the servos, which kinda falls in line with your moving the lever a touch and it "goes" again.
Guess if it were mine, I'd take the time to drop the oil and gently lower that lower plate cover just to see what is lying in the bottom of the old gal.
If it is nice and clean in there and all is where it should be, perhaps the problem is further back in the rear end? Like maybe it is slipping into/out of neutral or something? (This is a stretch, I know).
Dunno, having trouble placing that "clang" sound and the "binding" symptom together.
The early hydros had a different material on the pads of the pistons that would disintergate over time. Hope the old sister isn't unraveling on ya.
