Like George said, clean is critical. I like to spread plastic coated butcher paper on the bench to keep the odd parts from picking stuff up.
To the extent you can, use compressed air to dry the clean parts. Especially when you go to clean out and dry inside the block. Don't go in there with a rag. There's a lot of burrs in there that'll snag lint and whole threads off a rag leading to problems later.
I vaguely recollect that the old head gaxket on mine looked just like machined steel and I almost missed it. And, if your kit is like the one I got for the unit on my SuperC, you'll have a few O-rings left over.
