OT cattle guards

My wife is getting pretty fed up having to go through two sets of gates to get from the road to our house. I can't say I blame her one bit as it is a pain. I built one cattle guard out of 4" pipe but the sheep just trotted across it and the cows jumped over it although I thought 5 feet would be wide enough. I have looked on the internet but cannot find any foolproof specification for width, spacing, size of pipe etc. Do any of you guys have any experience with what works?
