As Gene says, at an auction anything goes. The SMTA at the time was "revolutionary", although it is nothing more than a Super M with TA and independent PTO. Add to that the one year of production, and you have the reason for the price. Some people will pay that much for a good original and do none of the cosmetics. In some ways that makes them more valuable than restored ones. It simply depends on the point of view of the buyer and the amount of money he has. And, the price of collector type items does not have to make any practical sense at all.
