Yes, switching the charger off exposes your (partly) cleaned part to corrosion, so keep it switched on or remove part from the solution. The only hazard associated with electrolysis is that it gives off hydrogen gas and oxygen gas, which may form an explosive mixture. So do it outside ONLY. Ever heard of batteries exploding while being charged? Same phenomenon, same problem :-(
