Jump Starting/Charging Connections

My MV is rarely started and sometimes needs to have the battery charged. Since the battery cover is difficult to remove should I be able to charge the battery by connecting the charger to the ground bolt on the tractor and to the starter nut without disconnecting them? Seems like it would be the same as connecting to the battery posts ;however, I tried to jump the battery by connecting my jump cables across these same points and it would not jump start? Its a 12 volt system with a Mag. Thanks
