If the tractor won't shift into gear from neutral while the engine is running, the clutch disc is probably stuck to the pressure plate or flywheel. Many times this can be broken loose by placing the tractor in 1st gear, pushing in and holding in the clutch, and then starting up the tractor - several times - with a good bit of throttle. Keep the clutch pedal depressed. Just be out in a big open area and allow yourself room to shut it off and stop rolling before you hit something. When it breaks loose, it will probably be fine from then on.... I mention this next consideration only because you said this is your very first tractor: If what you mean is you can not shift from one gear to another without violent grinding while the tractor is moving, that is normal as the gears in an M, like most tractors, are not synchronized. mike
