What spark plugs do you have in it? On my 706 if you put in what the book calls far Champion D-21's it will do just that, sputter after it runs awile under load. I put in D-15's or equal heat range brand of your choice and it runs perfect. I would chuck that electronic ignition and put a new set of points in. At least with points you can tell with one look if they are good.
