The Drive on IH tractors starters are notorious for jambing into the ring gear. They can dammage the ring gear (requiring a split to fix) Sometimes they come loose by violent rocking of the tractor in high gear (with a loader, that is tough unless up) they always come loose by loosening the starter. A new drive is the ticket. When it is out, look at the ring gear to check its teeth compared to teeth just a little to one side. 4 cylinder 4stroke engines almost always stop in one of two places in the engine rotation due to compression resistance. If the teeth look fair, Leave it alone and get the newer drive from IH. JimN

Up till then, this tractor had been running a corn grinder and pulling a trailer. It had new unfilled rear tires and no wheel weights.
