Does the sentry light come on and if it does then one easy thing that you could do is to swap the 2 switches under the floor plate around with each other and see if the problem switches to the even gears. These 2 switches are straight up and down with a pig tail pluged into the harness. The older switches would leak externally and all the way through the wires and into the plug end and cause such a failior. If that don't work then there are other things that can be checked before the clutch pack is condemed. As for the hyd problem checking the filter for metal would be the first and if no metal is found then there could be a valve hanging up or a bad spring causing the brakes and steering to act up. Is your tractor front wheel assist and have duals on the front or not. Please respond to what you know and find.
