The large nut retains the pulleys on pump and yes it needs to be tight.The shaft packing is a type of round nut 4 or 6 slots in it that threads in end of pump right inside that large nut.if pump is'nt leaking coolant i would leave it alone. if it is leaking do'nt tighten very much.
