Is this set up like my 424, with the 4 glow plugs in SERIES? If so, both sides of the heater are brought out to the connecions on the outside, and are INSULATED from the glow plug's outer shell, that screws into the engine. If there is a short between one of the leads from the heater, and the shell, that short wouldn't show up when the glowplugs were connected up OUTSIDE of the engine, but there would be a short to ground when they are installed, putting a severe load on the dash-mounted resistor.
