I had the engine rebuilt but now have a problem witht he glow plugs. I have burnt out two resistors that mount on the dash. I have hooked up the glow plugs witht he wires attached outside the engine and they work properly, but once installed in the engine they short out causing the resisor to burn out on the dash. I am wondering if the pre combustion sleeves could be out of position just enough to short out the glow plugs. Has anyone run into this before or have any suggesitons. Thanks Ted

Hi Ted, glow plugs are in series and should drop about 1.5V across each glow plug and 6V across dash indicator. Get yourself an Ohm meter, remove the copper wires between the glow plugs and measure resistance from screw on glow plug to engine block...should be open circuit or very high resistance in 100 meg Ohms.

Ted, I rebuilt my B-275 this past summer and I used a made in india head and the precups appeared to line up but when I torqued down the injectors the pre cups came into contact with the glow plugs and shorted them out.

Ted, check the voltage between ground and each glow plug end. Each one should be a little less then the one in series before it. If you get a big drop in voltage (almost no voltage) then that glow plug or the one before it is grounded. When I pulled my glow plugs I could see scrapes on them from hitting the pre cups. Look in the plug hole and see if you can see or feel any of the pre cup. I had to pull my injectors and pre cups so I could hog out the holes in the pre cups to clear the plugs. They are very hard and I used a dremal tool. It took a while but I got them.

Is this set up like my 424, with the 4 glow plugs in SERIES?

If so, both sides of the heater are brought out to the connecions on the outside, and are INSULATED from the glow plug's outer shell, that screws into the engine.

If there is a short between one of the leads from the heater, and the shell, that short wouldn't show up when the glowplugs were connected up OUTSIDE of the engine, but there would be a short to ground when they are installed, putting a severe load on the dash-mounted resistor.

I have a IH-424D that the glow plugs have quit on. Would like to replace whole system. Do you have a source for the glow plugs and the resistor

Any way to check the plugs individually to find the good/bad ones?

Besides CNH, any automotive store that sells AC or Champion spark plugs can get those glow plugs.

A guy had 4 new AC 26G's on ebay the other day, for $49,95, and nobody bid. That was a good deal, I should have bid!

(Auction # 150043990484, if you care to look it up.)

The glow plugs should have .9 Ohms resistance between the 2 connections, and INFINITE resistance from the terminals to the shell that screws into the engine.

jdemaris, who posts on several of these boards, posted a while back that he has made adapters to put modern glow plugs in place of these.

These GP's have an 18MM thread, the newer-style units for automotive use are, I believe, 8MM or 10MM.

I am considering doing that, and installing a controller, so preheating is automatic, when the key is turned on for a few seconds.

Bob --- Thanks for the info on the glow plugs. I've been using a small amount of starting fluid to crank mine (I know - NO GOOD). Got to get it fixed. Thanks. Bob Farrell
