I think it comes down to the type of restoration you are trying to complete. No offense meant to anyone, but a lot of guys on this forum lean towards function over form in most cases of tractor restoration. Cleaning it up and giving it some paint to make it look better than rust, is the goal. However, if you do that, then you will not be able to give the paint a smooth surface underneath. THe paint will look layered, and maybe even chip off in the near future. I'm planning on focusing on aesthetics. I will pay attention to mechanical refurbishing, of course, but my main goal is a brilliant looking show tractor. So for me, removing every hint of old paint and all other residue is a requirement.
