I had some stuff in a spray can that I used to use and it was great, it was sticky when it dried ,in seconds, and you could set a gasket in place and it wouldn't move on you, it made a good bond and you could still pull the gasket off if you needed to..I think it was a Permex product, a red spray, I used the can up and haven't come across the product for a while .but haven't looked hard either, I think Carquest handled it. As far as it being a necessity, I don't think so but I liked the adherent quality it added to a gasket job...Mike in Exeter Ontario
