Scottie: Sammy is right either are acceptable. I think there is a bit more to the old versus new than you've been told. Paper pullies were always the chioce of farmers doing heavy belt work, as they get better traction between pulley and belt than steel. As large threshers started to disappear, so did the paper pulley. The paper pulley was substancially more money than steel, thus farmers opted for steel once the thresher was gone and the pulley was being used less and less.

I remember my dad had a 1942 W4 with paper pulley. He traded it for a new H in 1951. The new H was to have all the options the W4 had plus belly hydraulics and distributor. When the H was delivered, it had a steel pulley. Dad said, "Not quite so fast guys, I had a paper pulley and I'm going to have a paper pulley. Dad agreed to put the steel pulley on the W4 and the 9 year old paper pulley on the new H. The dealer left with W4 and steel pulley, but was not happy about the trade off.
