O/T Hand Grease gun Problem

I have occasional problems with my hand grease gun. I load it by inserting the cartridge leaveing the top not tight to allow the air to release when pushing in the plunger, then I tighten the top and start pumping. It usually takes a few pumps to get primed then it will wor for awhile. Most often it will act empty after awhile or loose prime I take the top off to check and it is not empty. I know this may sound trivial but as like everything it always happens when your in a hurry or extra busy. Does anyone have a similare expierience and solution?
