Steering gear oil in B, and Super M

I am restoring my B.The front steering unit had grease in it.The book said use 90 wt oil. Took out the grease, what fun!!! Now with 90 wt, it leaks a little, all bolts are tight. Checked my Super M, grease in it too!!! Did the old farmers use grease instead of 90 wt oil in the front steering units?? Is grease ok?,or a real heavy oil?? Any ideas?? Thanks, Steve
