I don't use a timing light. It's more acurate to time it with the engine off. First, make sure the points are gapped exactly where you want them. Set the engine with #1 coming up on compression, then line up the timing mark where you want it to fire. Then put an ohm meter from the coil side of the points to ground and slowly rotate the distributor until the points break (Ohm meter goes to infinity) Lock her down right there and you are done.
