Timing Light

I have wanted to put a timing light on my 300u. Found one today at a rummage sale and bought it, but don't know if it works or will work.
It says "Niehoff T64 Timing Light" and has a positive, negative and a third wire on it.
Does anyone know:
Is this a 6 or 12 volt timing light, or do they work for both?
The third wire has a clamp on it and says use only over insulated wire, does this go over the #1 plug wire?
