Do you have a magneto or is it distributor ignition? It would have been magneto from new, but many have been changed. If it is a magneto, it sounds like it may need points. I jump 6 volt starters by putting the booster directly onto the starter's connection. Don't parallel a 12 volt booster with the 6 volt battery.
