When I replaced some of the stuff in my H's transmission I didn't need to split the tractor, so I haven't recent experience in this. both the upper and lower shafts can be taken out without splitting.
That said, if you're splitting it there you would have to take out not just the bolts holding the housings together. You've also got to remove the bearing cage assembly off the top shaft - or maybe not, if it will stay with the front housing when you pull it away, but you're going to have to take it off to get at the bearing anyway. Also the retainng nut on the bottom shaft has to come off.
