240 wiring

I have a new to me International 240. It starts and runs but the ammeter shows oppsite of what it ought to. It is 6V pos ground, the generator checks good at the local NAPA, there is a new regulator and a new battery. The lights have been removed completely, not even the switch is left. I am wondering if I should just re-wire the whole thing from scratch since many of the wires are nicked, taped-up and exposed. I have the diagram from the manual.
