Well, John T, and others who helped, I'm believing that the "L" terminal MUST be connected to something to make the regulator charge. Leaving the "L" terminal open, there is no charge. The regulator is new, but as others have said, "new" can also be bad. Generator does work as evidenced by approx 8 amps of charge with field terminal grounded. If the correct theory for the "L" terminal says that it must have a load in order to function, then leaving it "open" means there is no load, hence "no worky" in my way of thinking. John you mentioned that you can use this regulator and ignore the "L" terminal. But in "ignoring" it, do you still connect it to "something" even though no load is passing through it? Thanks for the discussion. This is really getting interesting. I haven't tried connecting the "L" to the electrical "loads" of the tractor. I first was curious as to what it would do with leaving it open and haven't gone to the next step. Fire away with your theories, folks. Oh, I'm a retired EE also, but 4 terminal voltage regulators were never in my work or training!!! John, if you find a schematic diagram of a 4 term reg, I'd be interested in seeing it.
