Bob, YES it matters how the ammeter is wired (its polarity sensitive) and I agree with Jim if its wired bass ackwards, it will register incorrect, but a simple wire swap will cure the problem. Regardless, ONLY one wire connects to what I call the Supply side, the hot ungrounded battery post often via the starter switch terminal, while the ammeters other Load terminal wires to the BAT terminal on a VR or Cutout Relay PLUSSSSSS feeds allllll loads like lights n ignition UNLESS one uses a 4 wire VR, in which case loads are served by the L terminal.

If you turn lights or ignition on not running the ammeter (if wired correct) shoud swing to the - discharge direction.
